Where experiments happen

Sessions run in the Behavioral Political Economy Lab on the 7th floor of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Building (Room S-736). Select studies may be hosted online when noted in the invitation.

How registration works

Registering adds you to our invitation list. We will email you upcoming experiments that match your availability. Signing up never commits you to a specific session—you pick the times that work best.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to participate?

Current members of the Stony Brook community may join. To verify affiliation, sign in with your @stonybrook.edu Google account during registration.

What happens after I register?

You will be added to the participant pool and receive email invitations when new experiments become available. Each invitation includes expected duration, compensation, and any prerequisites so you can decide whether to sign up.

Do I have to show up when I’m invited?

Invitations let you choose a specific session—respond only if you can attend. Once you confirm a time slot, you are expected to arrive on time; late arrivals cannot participate. You will receive a confirmation email with all session details for reference.

If your plans change, cancel as soon as possible so another participant can take your place. Repeated no-shows may result in removal from the participant pool.

Is participation compensated?

Yes. Most studies offer monetary incentives or course credit based on the decisions made during the experiment. Specific details are always provided before you commit to a session.

Do you pay me for participating? How much can I earn?

Most experiments offer a show-up fee just for arriving at your scheduled appointment. The amount is listed with each invitation—currently $7 unless a higher guaranteed minimum is provided for that study. Unused alternates are always compensated with the show-up fee.

Beyond any show-up payment, earnings depend on the decisions you make during the experiment and, in many studies, the anonymous partners or group members you are paired with. Because outcomes are driven by real-time decisions, the lab does not publish expected average payoffs in advance.

Can I update or withdraw my information?

Absolutely. After signing in you can manage your profile, availability, and consent preferences at any time. If you prefer to be removed entirely, contact us and we will confirm the deletion.

What is a show-up fee? Do all studies offer one?

The show-up fee is a guaranteed bonus—currently $7—that most studies pay when you arrive on time for your scheduled session. It is separate from any earnings generated during the experiment. If you are invited as an alternate and the session is already full, you still receive the show-up fee when you check in on time.

Some studies do not offer a show-up fee because their minimum guaranteed earnings are already higher than the standard amount. When a fee is offered, the invitation and study page will list it explicitly; assume there is no show-up payment unless it is posted. In all cases, alternates who cannot participate are paid at least the standard show-up amount.

How can I cancel my registration for an experiment?

Self-service cancellations are available from your participant dashboard up to the deadline set by the researcher—typically 12 hours before the session, though some studies allow more or less time. Always review the invitation or study page for the specific cancellation window.

If an emergency arises after the self-cancellation window closes, reply to your confirmation email or contact the experiment’s lead investigator directly to explain the situation. You can also reach the lab at decisionexperiments.bpel@stonybrook.edu for general inquiries. Please cancel as soon as possible so alternate participants have an opportunity to join.

How do I unsubscribe from future invitations?

You can pause invitations at any time by updating your availability and consent preferences on your participant dashboard. If you want your profile removed completely, email decisionexperiments.bpel@stonybrook.edu and our team will confirm once the account has been deleted.
